Accommodations: The Hostel includes five dormitory rooms with a total of 34 beds (bunks).  There are male, female, and mixed dorms (sometimes), as well as two private rooms.

History: HI-USA is a non-profit membership organization founded in 1934 to promote international understanding by educational travel through an operating network of more than 6,000 hostels in 70 countries.

The mission of HI-USA is "To help all people, especially young people, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people." Hostels provide a place to sleep, eat, wash up, and a way to meet interesting people. The hostellers provide all their own services, and clean up after themselves. This self-help system allows hostels to be inexpensive, and contributes to the friendly, cooperative spirit of hostelling.   Hostels are simple, safe, overnight accommodations supervised by house parents and located in scenic, cultural, and historic areas. Arriving Guests will check-in and check-out from the Ocean Cove Motel front desk located next door to Angies Guest Cottage facing 24th Street.

Amenities:

Private Rooms for 1 or 2 people.  HI Members only (check in 3-9 pm):   Private rooms cannot be reserved in advance (except sometimes in off season).  Reserve for a dorm and let us know that you prefer a private.  If a private room is available on the day you check-in, it is yours!  2 night minimum required. Private rooms are air-conditioned and linens are provided.

General Information:

Open: April 1st to October 1st (During the months when we are closed, our partner next door, Ocean Cove Motel, offers hostel "Private Rooms" for travelers. Rates, hours, and rules are the same as we have. Hostel guests will need to have a HI membership, international student card, or a passport. For reservations just email us).

"In Season" is considered to be the period between May 22nd to September 2, 2009.

Check-In: 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. If you need to arrive later than 9 p.m., we are sometimes able to make arrangements for you to stay at a private room Hostel rate next door at Ocean Cove Motel. Depending on what month you will be visiting, their office is open as late as 1 a.m. Otherwise, sorry, we are unable to accommodate late arrivals. 

Check-Out: 9:30-10 am.  Early check-outs possible when arrangements are made the night before by 9 pm.

One Night Visits:  We do not accept reservations for a 1-night stay (except occasionally from HI members when we're not so busy).

Day Use:  On the day of check-out, all guests must be out of the sleeping room by 10 am, however, HI members are welcome to leave luggage and return (up to 6 p.m.) to shower and change for a $7.50/day use surcharge per person.  Please make arrangements for day use at check-out.

Hostel dorm rooms have lots of fans, no air-conditioning.

Occasionally, because space is limited, sleeping room is mixed. If you prefer to be in a single–sex dorm, please be sure to let us know prior to your arrival.

Kitchen is open 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Kitchen has refrigerator, range, microwave, dishes and utensils - there is not an oven. The kitchen is small so there is limited storage space. Dining area is in the garden or under the shelter at picnic tables.

Small lockers are provided in the dorms.  Please bring your own padlock, or one may be purchased locally.

If you are visiting in April, the weather can sometimes still be cool. This is a summer hostel and the dorm rooms are not heated. We have blankets and there is plenty of hot water.

During some weekends and holidays, a 3 night minimum stay is required. 

Sorry, no pets permitted.

We only accommodate guests who are on vacation/holiday. We cannot accommodate people who are here to live and work. Foreign exchange students coming to work for the summer are welcome to stay  for 2-3 nights when first arriving in Virginia Beach while looking for permanent accommodations.

Balance for total nights reserved due upon arrival, payable by cash or traveler's checks only. If you would like to pay by MasterCard or Visa, we add an industry service charge of approximately 3%.

Local, state, and lodging taxes are additional in above rate descriptions.  Current sales tax rate is 13%.

In the dorm, one child under 17 traveling with parent(s) is half price. Additional children are charged at regular Hostel rate. In private rooms, there is not a discount for children.

During your stay here we keep your HI Membership card or some other type of ID that has your name on it (i.e., passport, student ID, library card). Please remember to bring your membership card with you or some other type of ID that can be left with us until checkout.

Reservations:
We will hold a reservation with a valid MasterCard or Visa number and expiration date. Use The "Reservation Request" link at the bottom of the page.  If we reply, confirming availability, you can then call 757-491-1830 to give your credit card information.   For Group Reservations please see section below for deposit information.

Cancellations:  For dorm beds, cancellations must be received 48 hours prior to arrival date. .  Cancellations less than 48 hours prior to arrival date will be charged one night per person.  Private room cancellations must be received 14 days prior to arrival and will be charged $10 per person.  Cancellations less than 14 days will be charged two nights per person.
